Hotel St. Francis

This is one of those images I should not publish but I just like it. I shot this a while back while I was roaming the streets of Tijuana, Mexico. Just walking around with my Sony RX100iii and taking pictures of interesting things.

What interested me about this was the light and how it played across the building. What was causing it was a building under construction/deconstruction (hard to tell in Latin America at times) about a block away. The morning sun was hitting that and then coming down on the hotel in front of me. It was just a cool pattern that I stopped and took a picture of this.

Editing was straight up. Just a curves adjustment to make it lower key and then local work with dodging and burning. Then a quick white balance in Camera Raw and then done.

Enjoy.

Arched Viewing

I was in Tijuana, Mexico last week. As always I eat at my usual spot Hotel Nelson on Santa Cecilia Square. Which just happens to be there the famous Tijuana Arch is located.

I always like eating there and people watching since it’s the main gateway to downtown Tijuana. You got mariachis in traditional outfits to just older guys with instruments walking up and asking if you want music for a tip. You see the Mexican families out for the day. You got vendors selling stuff. Chinese tour groups partaking “authentic” Mexican experience of a cheap Tequila shot and a Corona. The other day tourists coming in walking around with a dazed look that a city that is so close to the United States could be oh so subtly different.

I always take a wander around the plaza. Fending off offers for food and souvenirs of stuff I don’t need. If you aren’t used to it can be intimidating but it’s just the way it works there. You just give a polite no and a smile. They are just doing their job.

I took the two shots of the Arch on different days even though they look the same. The one with the sign that says Av. Revolucion is from the pathway into downtown. The other is from Plaza Santa Cecilia.

I am also throwing in a picture of the walkway through Plaza Santa Cecilia. I just like it and it’s not good enough for a standalone image.

All the images were shot on my Canon S100 and just processed in Lightroom and Photoshop. Nothing overly fancy as the files can’t hold up to a lot of abuse.

Enjoy.

Burritos

Just a quick one that I missed yesterday for around Tijuana. Don’t have a lot of time to edit due to other commitments but I didn’t want this rolling burrito stand to just languish in the archives.

Around Tijuana

Just some random snaps from my walks around Tijuana. It’s my main style of “street photography”. It gives you a sense of feel of a location versus just people put into an image to give it a sense of life. Don’t worry, I have some of those images but I like this type of street photography better. You just walk and lose yourself and just take a picture of what interests you. It’s more casual and you don’t feel like you are on the hunt for the perfect scenario with a person in it.

Enjoy

Tijuana Sunset

Seems appropriate to post since I am now home from Tijuana. Had a great time.

On a sad note, this was the last image shot on the Mighty Canon 330HS, the lens covers have bent and are stuck now. It gave its life for art!

Enjoy

Life in Tijuana

This is just one of those street photography shots you got with because everything lined up. I was just going to shoot the seafood cart and the interesting building. Instead I saw the man walking down the hill and just waited for him to get centered on the crosswalk. It all lined up and very happy with the image. Hope you enjoy it.

Between Two Faces

Similar to the popular web show, Between Two Ferns. Well not really.

I remember taking this image because the woman stopped while I was framing the shot. So I pretended I took it and moved the camera down and the second she was between the two faces it was back up and I got the image I wanted. It pays to wait sometimes to get the show you were looking for.

Enjoy.

China in Tijuana

The words translate to Colony of China is Tijuana but I really don’t know what the building is. The entrance way is a parking lot behind it. I just really just like the colors and the feel of the building.
