Cutting Through

Cutting Through

This is from Great Falls earlier this year when I went out for a New Year’s hike with my Sony A7R and a polarizing filter. The weather was nice and it wasn’t that crowded so it was a pleasant day out. One of the things I have been late to the game with has been polarizing filters. Sure, you can somewhat reproduce the results with editing software but there is still something about a good polarizing filter that makes an…

Twin Falls

Twin Falls

I took this photo¬†along the C&O Canal trail near Great Falls on the Maryland side of the falls. I honestly don’t remember a whole lot about this photo. There was lots of water flowing due to recent rains and the river and various creeks were flowing due to the excess water. This was a runoff from some stream that was being drained into a canal lock. I just liked the light in this which is why I took the image….

Frothing Away

Frothing Away

This was shot at Great Falls earlier this year. Was a warm day so I took a hike out there. The title is a bit sketchy but it popped into my head. Sometimes these things are easy to name and sometimes they are not. Sometimes an image just needs a monochrome conversion to bring out the details. There wasn’t a lot of color to begin with so I wanted it to be about the texture of the rocks and water….

Into The Mix

Into The Mix

I promised a water heavy week and I am delivering on the promise. This is another one from Great Falls. I took this image standing on a bridge that goes over a rocky ravine with a small channel running through it. If you have never shot on a bridge before you are in for a treat. Bridges move. Alot. You don’t really register it in a vehicle but standing on a bridge you will notice it quickly. Trying to time…

Rush of Water

Rush of Water

I promised a series yesterday since I just wasn’t in a position to post after an extremely long day at work. So I will deliver as promised. This series might be a bit abstract for some. I was shooting at Great Falls and I just was fascinated by the light on the white water areas. So I took the opportunity to photograph these while I was doing other landscape work. I knew it would be a bit more abstract than…

Where The Falls Begin

Where The Falls Begin

This is the first view of Great Falls you see from the Maryland side. You walk out to an overlook that allows you to see the river where it turns into the falls. This week may be heavy on the water theme. I’ll see how I feel when I load up the rest of the images I have edit. Having the luxury of sitting on a large back catalogue I can jump around with my images. My mother who reads…

Tiny Bubbles

Tiny Bubbles

I shot these while hiking Great Falls last year. I was on the Maryland side and I was deep off trail. Nothing says fun while lugging a tripod with a Nikon D810 over your shoulder while not trying to fall into the churning water. There are two images here. Basically the same image just shot portrait and landscape. I could not figure out which version I liked better. When I hit the final save it’s the landscape version but I…

The Power Of Water

The Power Of Water

This is some channel off the Potomac River at Great Falls on the Maryland side. I was standing on a bridge shooting down. It’s somewhere before the overlook on the falls themselves. I am fairly certain that the rock is granite. Then again, I am not a geologist and I’m too lazy to Google. The image reminds you how water can carve through rock over the eons. You never really consider it until you pay attention to how the world…

Rocky Canyon

Rocky Canyon

Took this when I hiked Great Falls. I was on a bridge over the over river and just leaned my tripod up against the bridge rails and snapped images while the bridge wasn’t moving from people walking on it. I am fighting early onset of man flu I believe. Haven’t not felt great so I was worried I wasn’t even going to have the energy to edit a photo but I powered through. In the end I’m happy with the…

Natures Wooden Path

Natures Wooden Path

Rare that I share something I shot recently, like I shot it yesterday recent but I have been playing in the archives so wanted to show some recent work. I took this image at Great Falls on the Maryland side which is only 15 minutes from where I live. I was hoping the January 1 would be less crowded and I was right and slightly wrong. Turns out when I was there it wasn’t crowded. When I was leaving the…
