I have been considering this for some time and now it’s time to do it. I can no longer keep doing daily posts. Things have transpired in Thailand that weren’t anticipated but have turned out well.
I am now shooting more than I ever did. Love it. I just can’t share the images here because they are for others. This forces me to take those photos and do edits on them versus me doing my own work.
That said, while I have a ton of images on backlog I don’t have the time to sit and edit my own work and the clients at the same time. So I have then cherry pick an image or struggle to find one to publish and it’s not quality half the time. I’m worn from doing those edits and delivering them.
So I’m going to post when I can and where I can but it won’t be daily anymore. I rather have quality versus quantity. If I don’t have an image then nothing will be published. If I do have stuff that I think will work I’ll publish them.
Apologies for this but I think it the end it will work out better.
This was taken for friends of mine who are opening a new bar. They needed some interior images and I just really like this one.
Normally I don’t show off work I do for others but I really like the image. This was more of a test image but I ended up liking it a lot. There are two versions, this one I masked in from Intensify and the one we used for something else. Even with the minor issues it’s a cool image. The bar wasn’t open yet and I was just there doing some interior images for later.
This is just some of the stuff I am doing. What I can’t show and why I don’t have much time to shoot anymore.
Editing this was normal workflow and then I used Intensify to do bring out details. Nothing overly fancy going on here. Used my Sony A7R and a 16-35mm lens.
This was shot actually in Thailand. It’s a little place called Mike’s Mall as you can see in the background. There is usually a small market and then at night the vendors setup for drinks and other shopping stuff.
It’s weird running a photography site where I can’t actually show client photos. Which is all I shoot now. I have been complaining about it but it’s hard to find a balance when you need to manage the expectations of a client versus your own work. Trying to work with someone else to do a shooting day where we go out and just spend a day taking pictures. Hoping it works out.
The other issue is I find myself shooting stuff that is more for me than anyone else. This leads to a logistical question of what do I do? Continue a site where time for personal work is limited. Living in Thailand has been an amazing experience and I have loved every minute of it. It’s not like being on a holiday where I get up and decide what I want to do today or not. Still, I have my own schedule but there are certain realities I have to keep as well.
Will either try to find a balance in the coming weeks one way or the other. Who knew that slowly transitioning to what I really wanted to do would lead to a quandary for my own personal work. Don’t get me wrong, I love the photos I’m taking. It’s just not for here.
Editing this was a challenge. It’s noisy to begin with because was shot on my RX100. This meant trying to keep the noise down but get a usable image out it. Normal workflow but I didn’t sharpen it. Would just increase the noise already there.
Part of the storm series I did when I was in Florida. This was just a bit of pink cloud left over from the first storm as the second storm moved in.
While I am shooting regularly, as I indicated, it’s not always for publication. Yet, I keep my eyes open for opportunities to do some personal work and I think I have found something interesting I can shoot quickly using one of my smaller cameras. Little bit of life in Thailand. Hoping to get to it this weekend but have some stuff already scheduled so will see.
Editing this was a bit different. I did my normal workflow but then immediately went to Intensify and used my favorite preset. Still wasn’t happy so I loaded up Color Efex and had a run through it. Played with a few sliders until I was happy and then called it good to go.
Shot this in Fort Myers, Florida when I was there. This was after the first storm rolled in and the next one was coming.
Been shooting a lot lately. Just not stuff I can publish here as its for a client. Been great to shoot stuff I’m not used to. So used to landscape photography that I never really messed with flash work. Now I am shooting people in a run and gun style with a flash. Bit of a learning curve but a good one as I know flash photography in theory and have done a bit but now it’s something I am doing almost daily.
Think with photography you either push yourself or you get bored. I love landscape and travel. Thing is now that I do it for some pocket change I have to put the client first and me secondary. This is forcing a challenge for to find the time to shoot my own personal work as now I shoot at night, edit during the day and turn around and repeat. Good because I like it. Bad because personal work goes out the window.
Editing this was mostly my normal workflow. I have been playing with Intensify a lot. I am in the phase where I like to bring out the details and get away with it. The Nikon D5500 is a solid little camera. The resolution is amazing so I can push the files. Hence I did.
Took this while I was in Florida on Estero Bay near Fort Myers. Was on a boat in the middle of the day.
Sadly this is one of these place holder images I do that should be apart of a series but I haven’t had time. Since moving to Thailand I have been busy with so many other things that editing has taken second place.
This time I had to edit photos for someone else on a quick turn around. So I have been editing most of the afternoon to get them done and turned over. So I’m a little fried from looking at Photoshop right now.
Editing wise this was normal workflow. Then I took it into Intensify to bring out the clouds a bit more. Originally masked it in at 40% and it was way too much. Took it down to 13% and got the effect I was looking for. Bit of a dodge and burn and good to go.
I like this plane. Plus I’m still in flux with my new place and an easy edit for me so bear with me while I settle into my new place.
One of the joys of living in Thailand is a crap electrical system. My place is older so there aren’t many outlets so the stringing together of power strips that shoot sparks every time you plug something new into them gives you a cheerful feeling of oh shit. I have learned to plug in the cord before plugging it into the equipment. If you think wow, sparks shoot out from an empty cord, you more or less nailed Thailand’s electrical system. It’s rather unbrilliant. I don’t care if its new or old construction. The electrical system over here is a complete mess and they are trying to clear it up. Just consider that the new tunnel they built that was supposed to open a year ago is still have “minor issues” you can figure out how well electric is going to go.
Editing this image is a mix of several layers. I just masked in a standard edit, a Intensify edit, HDR edit, and then some dodging and burning to get it to where it is. I like it.
Shot this in Luray caverns. I haven’t went back and edited the series like I intended because it’s such a challenge with the light, color correction and so many other things going on with the images.
Just a quick post today because I am actually setting up all my stuff. I moved to a new place here in Thailand and it will be home for the next 12 months. I haven’t unpacked all my stuff since June 5th when I left for Florida so this is the first time I am getting around to doing it. Of course the important, like my computers and other stuff were first but the rest must be unpacked and stored.
Editing this I was going to do it HDR and then mask it in with an Intensify layer. I did the HDR and was happy enough with it. When I did the Intensify portion it looked way better so never masked it in. I just did some dodging and burning and used a gradient in Camera Raw to do some rebalancing. Not the greatest of images but it does mess with your mind a bit.
I shot this last night on my way home. It’s one of three spirit houses in a field along the road. No idea why but they are there.
I had to take some shots last night of something else and I have been meaning to shoot this spirit house for some time. I know what a spirit house is for and but you can read about it here.
One of the things you get used to seeing in Thailand is a spirit house. They are all over the place and most properties have them. Some are simple affairs and some are very elaborate like this one. No one messes with them because no one wants to upset the spirits so things get left alone even when it’s valuable. While I can’t say for sure I can almost bet that the Buddha in this spirit house has real gold on the outside. The belief in spirits is very strong in Thais so you will never see a spirit house bothered.
I took this on my A7R with my 16-35mm lens. When I went to edit I did the usual workflow and then brought it into Aurora HDR. Once I was happy with that I masked in a detail layer I did in Intensify CK. From there I did a blend and dodged and burned a little to get the light back to where it needed to be. Was happy enough with it and said done.
Taken at the Sanctuary of Truth here in Thailand. Always worth a visit.
I have to be honest and say I wasn’t sure there was going to be an image today. One of the benefits of keeping the same publishing schedule but living on the other side of the world is I do the image daily and publish it the same day it goes live.
The issue facing me today is I had to go pickup a friend in Bangkok who flew in from Canada. I had to be up at the unholy hour of 7 AM local time. Since I moved here, I go to bed around 3 or 4 AM because there just isn’t a reason to be up and running around early. So the 7 AM just about killed me because while I attempted to go to sleep at Midnight I mostly just dozed on and off till the alarm went off at 7 AM.
Once I dropped my friend off at his house and got a bite to eat it was promptly operation I’m going to go and take a nap and wake up whenever. Luckily I had a few hours to spare so I got up in time to do a photo edit.
I wanted to pump the details in this image. I have been super masking happy lately and this one was no different. I first did the image in HDR and had that as a layer. I then went into Intensify CK and used preset to bump the hell out of the details and then had that as a layer. I then masked the two together but wasn’t happy. Finally I used Tonality CK and a black and white detail version and then an opacity mask for just a bit more detail. I then dodged and burned to bring a few things down or up depending on what was required.
Maybe I should nap more before editing.
