Baltimore Tattoo Convention Part 1

Went to the Baltimore Tattoo Convention on Saturday and shoot a whole load of images.  I’ll break it up so people don’t get overwhelemed with people getting inked.  For inquiring minds, no I didn’t get any work done.  I am too cheap to pay US prices on tattoos.  I get them done by my guy in Thailand.

For those of you un initiated in the tattoo arts that back piece is likely months worth of work.  Looks like the guy was going to add color.

Baltimore Tattoo Convention

I have never seen so many face tattoos in one place but I guess I was at a tattoo convention.

This is a typical I’m getting a tattoo look.  You are bored a good chunk of the time.

Outlining.  The blue stuff is the template they lay down to work off of.  It’s essentially mimeograph paper.

Hair of the Dog

This is really an old picture from Prague.  I wasn’t what you called an enthusiastic traveler to the city.  I went with a friend and the photos reflect that I wasn’t thrilled to be there.  I am debating on redoing all the images I took and finally editing them down into something cohesive but thats when I finally get around to it.  Until then I was inspired to finally publish this picture because Spike over at Pattaya Days published a pig picture that reminded me of this one so I dug it out and did some editing. I figured if Spike could post a pig shot I could post a dog shot.

For inquiring minds this was shot on my first DSLR ever the Canon XSi and the most craptastic lens ever the Tamron 18-200.  I thought $500 was a serious investment in a camera when I bought.  I have a single lens that cost 3 times that now.  I really need to take up knitting or something else that is cheap.

Throw Away Flowers

I had a brutal sinus headache when I took these shots.  I went for a walk hoping that the outside air would help get rid of the headache but it didn’t.  I even stopped at a local tavern to quench my thirst hoping the beer would help with the headache.  No such luck.  So none of these are really inspired or that great as I was going through the motions.  They are just some throw aways as I go through the back catalogue that I have.

Subway Stories

I will freely admit that I don’t like the Washington DC Metro.  Living in the suburbs means you drive and public transportation just isn’t something most of us consider.  When I have to go into DC itself its more convenient to take the Metro from my office to the office we have downtown considering the stop is in the building.  So with camera in hand off I went.

I almost didn’t publish these because I had my Olympus EM1 with my Nikon 55 1.2 attached to the camera so everything was manual focus which is a bit of a challenge in a dark environment with an electronic viewfinder.  I did one set of edits and hated them so I scrapped them and went back in and did them another way that I am more comfortable with and Subway Stories was born.  None of the images are technically flawless but its a change of pace of endless flower pictures which I am not really a fan of but apparently I’m really good at shooting.

Staring down the tunnel waiting for the train.

Subway Stories

The signs let you know which way the train is heading.  If you are public transportation challenged like me they are extremely helpful so you don’t screw up and get on the wrong train not that I have done that (much).

The Trees

Points if you get the song reference.

I almost didn’t post these.  The leaves are just funky to look at because they don’t look sharp.  Then I was just going through Shoot Tokyo (who you should check out) and saw the tree pics over there shot on both film and digital and realized it wasn’t me being a horrible photographer. For some reason cameras have a hard time shooting blooming trees.  So while not up to my standards I figure I share them out and some may like them.  For those interested all the images were shot on either the Ricoh GR or the Olympus EM1.  If the sky looks really blue figure its the Ricoh because I engages the built-in neutral density filter.  I was too lazy to attach the filter to the EM1 lens.

Enjoy

The Muse

This is Baltimore City Hall.  I have shot this building more than any other building in my photo collection.  For whatever reason when I am in Baltimore I always take a picture of it.  I have to say this one is my favorite because I finally has a wide lens on the camera.  In this case it was the Ricoh GR that was with me.  I edited film like because the building is of an older style so black and white film and with the grain kept in.  Normally I’m obsessive about getting my skies clean of noise and I can layer it in Photoshop till its gone but I went with the film look so it stayed.  Speaking of film, I own a Leica film camera now.  It might motivate me to shoot a complete roll and not kill it by not really knowing what to do with film.  Remains to be seen. Until then, enjoy.
