Architecture Shapes Travel-Tourism

The Reclining Buddha

The Reclining Buddha at Wat Pho located in Bangkok.  If there is a tourist trap in Bangkok bigger than the Grand Palace this would be it.  You get charged to go in and they herd you through as fast as possible.  They truck the tourists in by the bus loads and its not really that great of an experience.  Most Wats (Temples) in Thailand are pretty laid back with groups of people chatting and visiting, you have monks and nuns running around and everything is just sorta calm and relaxing.  If you want to get a moment you go into a sala (call it a room in translation) that has a Buddha in it and you can do some praying if you like.  Wat Pho has this believe it or not but you have to leave the tourist path which isn’t made obvious to most people.  Luckily I had a guide and I had the knowledge of Thailand to know you can wander all over the Wat grounds and not have any issues.  So I got to see the real Wat Pho other than the Reclining Buddha and the hordes of trucked in tourists.

* WOW! This would be my 300th post between this site and the original Tumblr.  Go me! *
